Overview
Passive RF components are used extensively in low-temperature applications, including quantum computing, aerospace, and scientific research. Spectrum Control’s in-house cryogenic thin-film technology maintains resistance down to near absolute zero.
Spectrum Control’s expertise in designing and building components for demanding environments includes our line of attenuators and terminations that provide temperature-stable operation up to 40 GHz at temperatures down to 4°mK.
Common thin-film resistors from other suppliers do not perform at low temperatures:
- Thick-film resistors become insulators and turn attenuators into opens
- Thin-film resistors become super-conductive and turn attenuators into shorts
Application Example: Quantum Computing
Solving the problems of thermal noise in cryogenic chambers
Spectrum Control is offering fixed attenuators for cryogenic cooling systems to aid quantum computing. Quantum computers, using qubits, can handle complex data that supercomputers cannot. Cryogenic systems need effective cooling to reduce thermal noise, and Spectrum Control's coaxial cryo-attenuators address this challenge.
To read a qubit, it must be isolated from interference, requiring temperatures as low as 4mK in cryogenic chambers. This demands thousands of coaxial attenuators that function well in these conditions. Spectrum Control provides reliable attenuators designed for mK operation to eliminate thermal noise, utilizing its expertise in harsh environments and custom component delivery.
